DEQ Training
This unique and innovative training concept has been designed to be user friendly by eliminating the need for lots of paper-based assessments. Candidates will be assessed using the latest video and audio technology with evidence compiled and stored electronically on their behalf by the training provider. This totally unique concept will improve the efficiency of the candidate assessment, allowing more time to be spent on skills development, training and commercial awareness. This totally unique concept utilises an electronic portfolio to improve the efficiency of candidate assessment.
What is the DEQ Apprenticeship?
The DEQ Apprenticeship consists of the following ‘framework’ of qualifications;
• BHS Stage 2 Horse Knowledge & Care (& up to Stage 2 Riding)
• NVQ Level 2 Horse Care
• Key Skills (Including Application of Number & Communication)
• Employer Rights & Responsibilities
Horse Power will provide the knowledge and skills through training delivered 1 day per week at local Centres of Excellence. The employer will support this training by providing the practical experience to put those skills to the test.

How is Training Delivered?
Candidates attend Horse Power Centres of Excellence to undertake DEQ training and assessment. Each candidate has an allocated Work Based Assessor to carry out assessments, provide support to both candidate and trainer, and to ensure that the welfare/health and safety needs of staff and students are being met. Each candidate will work towards an individual learning plan accounting for varying ability levels and experience, on average it will take 12 months to complete the DEQ Apprenticeship.
Entry Criteria
The DEQ Apprenticeship is available for anyone 16-65 years of age, not in full-time education but employed within the equine industry. Please see the apprentice section within this leaflet to check your eligibility.
How much will it cost?
If eligible, DEQ training is funded by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) and DEQ Training partnership. Training on the Apprenticeship programme for 16-18 year olds is a priority and fully funded by Government. Training for adult learners (19 years and older) is part funded with a required employer fee contribution. The DEQ Training Partnership has agreed to subsidise the adult funding until August 2010 and therefore no employer fee contributions will charged for enrolments prior to this date.
